Performance and Capability
With the Tacoma lineup, you get several configuration options, yet both of these models are pretty similar.
Engine options: Both the SR5 and TRD Off-Road have the same 3.5-liter V6 engine (278 hp/265 lb-ft). However, the SR5 comes standard with the 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine (159 hp/180 lb-ft).
Drivetrain: The SR5 and TRD Off-Road come with two- or four-wheel drive. While the 6-speed Electronically Controlled automatic transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) is standard, you can also choose a 6-speed manual with the TRD Off-Road model.
Suspension: The suspension remains similar between the two models. They both have a coil-spring double-wishbone design in the front and a leaf spring rear suspension with staggered outboard-mounted gas shock absorbers and a stabilizer bar. Yet, the TRD Off-Road contains a special-tuned suspension with Bilstein® shocks.
Towing capacity: To determine Tacoma towing capacity, you must look at the trim level, engine, and drivetrain. With 2023 Tacoma models, V6 models tow up to 6,800 pounds, but the four-cylinder is only rated for a maximum of 3,500 pounds.
OFF-ROAD PERFORMANCE
Either Tacoma trim includes these specifications.
- 9.4 inches of ground clearance
- Hill Start Assist Control (HAC)
Yet, some of the angles are different:
- Approach angle (degrees): 29 (SR5)/32 (TRD Off-Road)
- Departure angle (degrees): 23.5 (SR5)/23.1 (TRD Off-Road)
- Breakover angle (degrees): 24 (SR5)/20 (TRD Off-Road)
Both trucks come with similar drivetrain options:
- Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): includes Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD)
- 4WDemand: Is a part-time 4WD with an electronically controlled transfer case and Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD) – available with both models
ON-ROAD PERFORMANCE
As you head down the road, you shouldn’t notice a big difference in how the truck handles or rides. Although, I have noticed that the TRD Off-Road feels a bit more unsettled when hitting road bumps, especially at higher speeds. However, you should test them out for yourself at a local dealership.

Price and Value
Tacoma MSRPs depend on the configuration and your location.
These are the MSRPs for the 2023 Tacoma models:
- SR5: $30,040
- TRD Off-Road: $36,440
That’s a difference of $6,400 between the two Tacoma trims. Of course, this difference changes based on which engine, drivetrain, cab configuration, and bed size you choose.
Based on this information alone, the SR5 is the cheaper option, but it may not have all of the features you desire.

Should You Buy the Tacoma SR5 or TRD Off-Road?
You can’t go wrong with either Tacoma truck. Yet, if you want to hit the trails, you may prefer the functionality of the TRD Off-Road more.
Yet, it could also be beneficial to choose the TRD Off-Road if you appreciate the added features. Instead of adding these features to the price of the SR5 (when available), you could get them all by choosing the higher trim level.
You should also check out the other Tacoma trim levels to see if something fits your needs better.
